Taramoin: Oral Tradition and Written Tradition In Nursery School Thio, New Caledonia 1984-1998

Author: Ngoc-Anh,Tràn

Translated from the French by Sylvia T. Flowers and Armand Hage

Description: The Kanak are the indigenous people of New Caledonia, struggling in the French education system. In 1977, only 5.8% of high school graduates were Kanak. Although the nickel discovery sparked an economic boom, the Kanak was largely neglected until 1988. A 1990 doctoral dissertation showed that their educational challenges stem from transitioning from their unwritten native language to a written teaching language.
