Programme Description |
Master of Science in Physics Programme of the Department of Physics, Fiji National University, will become the leading post-graduate program in Fiji and in the region in terms of education and research in Physics. The Department uses “To have advanced knowledge and research skills in core Physics in Fiji, go to FNU” as our target for strengthening the program and for promoting Physics education and research in Fiji.
Programme Aims:
•To provide a high-quality education which prepares students for further study and research in physics and for a wide range of career opportunities in industry and commerce.
•To maintain an environment in a research-active department in which staff are committed to teaching physics as a coherent and challenging subject.
•To support teaching and learning with well-equipped laboratory, library and computing facilities.
•To monitor, review and enhance educational provision to ensure that it remains intellectually demanding and relevant to the current needs of physics graduates.
•To provide the support and guidance that students need, and to encourage them to take on responsibility for their educational development.
•To foster a friendly and stimulating learning environment in which students are motivated to reach high standards, acquire real insight into physics and become self-confident, committed and adaptable graduates.
•To continue to attract well-qualified students.
Programme Objectives
The objectives of the Master of Science in Physics programme are to train physicists capable of working in research institutes, schools, colleges or corporate environments. Upon successful completion of the programme, students will have acquired:
•Thorough knowledge of physics in general as well as more in-depth knowledge of at least one specialized area;
•The ability to make sound judgments informed by current research;
•The ability to gain new insights and results and to develop new methods;
•The ability to solve physical problems using the most appropriate experimental and/or theoretical methods and to report on research findings;
•The ability to structure and analyse specific problems in different situations; strong teamwork skills;
•The ability to communicate findings and insights;
•A critical understanding of the role that physics plays in society.
This is an initial Master's programme and can be followed on a full-time or part-time basis.
