The Learning Design Team forms the heart of the Center for Flexible and E-Learning. They design, implement and evaluate flexible learning practices, offering pedagogically sound learning and teaching experiences appropriate to the needs of students and staff. CFEL also develops and implements multimedia courseware for flexible learning. The team comprises Learning Designers, Learning Technologists and Multimedia Production Assistants.

Modes of Delivery

FNU is offering more and more students the option of studying flexibly from home, work or virtually any location at their own time and pace. This is called Flexible Learning (FL). FL aims to deliver a quality university education to students both locally and in the region. FL is convenient for students unable to be physically present on campus. CFEL is facilitating the development of courses and programmes in FL.

What are the Benefits of Studying via FL?

Studying by flexible learning offers a range of benefits for students in a variety of situations, for example:- Not having to take leave to attend classes on campus;

Having a choice over how (mode) you complete your courses and programmes;
Being able to study from any location with low to no classroom time required;
Being able to pace how you cover your content over a semester;
Balancing studies without compromising family time and extra curricula commitments;
Attempting and submitting assessments online.

Modes of Delivery
Flexible learning utilises a range of technologies and teaching methods to deliver instruction from lecturer to student. There are three methods or modes by which courses and programmes are delivered flexibly at FNU using technology. They are:

Face to face (F): where a course is mainly delivered in a classroom based setting orally or in writing. Technology use is minimal and may be used for tutorials or course announcements and assignments submission for example.
Blended (B): where a course uses online and face-to-face delivery. Technology use is substantial whereby the content is delivered online, typically using online discussions and assessment methods, and has some face to face teaching.
Online (O): where a course is mainly delivered online using a learning management system and conferencing tools. Technology use is substantial and will typically have no face-to-face teaching.

There may be courses taught intensively from time to time using one of the above modes of delivery. FNU is continually developing more courses and programmes for FL delivery as demand increases to cater to the diverse needs of students.

What is a learning system?

Simply stated, it is a collection of appropriate tools that are properly organised to create an environment that facilitates the learning process. At FNU, we tend to refer to learning systems in the context of technology use to support learning and teaching.

The following section lists the current inventory of learning systems available at FNU and which CFEL uses to develop and deliver courses for flexible learning. As new technology is adopted for the purpose of learning and teaching, they will be listed here.

Good Practice, Networks & Research

The Centre for Flexible & E-Learning encourages good practice in the approach to design, delivery and enhancement of learning and teaching experiences at FNU.

CFEL is guided by the:

– Learning & Teaching Enhancement Strategy 2018-2020.

The Centre is excited to be developing a series of good practice guides for technology enabled/enhanced learning at FNU for students and teachers. Guides will include but are not limited to: Moodle, Turnitin, Mahara (ePortfolios), Open Educational Resources (OER) and more!
