Investing in Natural Capital: The Pacific Opportunity

This event brings together leaders, financiers, and policymakers to explore how that can happen. Hosted by Fiji National University and organised by Pacific Action for Climate Transitions (PACT), Investing in Natural Capital: The Pacific Opportunity is designed to move beyond conversations about the Pacific’s climate vulnerability and towards enhanced partnerships and new opportunities that can be taken to COP31 and developed into tangible, scalable investments in the Pacific.

Part 1: Setting the Scene — 20 mins

The presentation will highlight that the region’s ecosystems are valuable, overlooked internationally and at risk. It will provide the context and background for the focus of the event: that investing in blue and green natural capital is both a climate and an economic opportunity.

Part 2: Innovative partnerships for a Blue and Green Pacific – 50 mins

A panel of Pacific academic, community, conservation and private sector leaders discuss what the partnership models that are needed to catalyse investment in natural capital. The session will focus on the need for partnerships that respect Pacific leadership, management and knowledge for Pacific ecosystems while still attracting outside capital.

Part 3: Catalysing natural capital investment in the Pacific – 70 mins

Opportunities and challenges for investing in natural capital in the Pacific

Investors and finance practitioners will discuss the practicalities of how to mobilise capital for the Pacific, including, carbon markets, blended finance, green bonds and biodiversity credits. The discussion will include who is investing, who could and should be investing, and what are the opportunities and barriers for increasing investment in natural capital investment in the Pacific.

Part 4: Delivering on the Natural Capital Opportunity in the Pacific — 90 mins

During the closing session, high-level political leaders will discuss why natural capital investment matters for the region’s climate goals, and what can be signalled ahead of COP31.
