Unit Code: MEA306(AGRI-L4)

Unit Name: Applied Materials

Description: The purpose of this unit is to enable the development of the elementary safety, knowledge and skills required for using and understand the application of materials in engineering. This course focuses on the application of materials on the concept of material structures, Classification, properties, material testing, hot working process, cold working processes and the heat treatment processes. All topics are illustrated through theoretical and laboratory exercises. The course will cover the following areas: The safe handling of materials, Iron Carbide, Cementite, Perlite, polymers and ceramic materials, mechanical and physical properties, ferrous and nonferrous materials, pure and alloy, thermo plastics and thermosetting plastics, Plastomers, Tensile testing, Brinell hardness testing, Fatigue test, torsion test, Hardness test, monomer, co-polymer, microstructure and glass transition temperatures.

Learning Target Outcomes: On completion of this unit, students will be able to: 1. Apply knowledge and understand how iron and steels are produced and classifying engineering materials into various grades of steels, as ferrous and non-ferrous, metals and non-metals. 2. Apply knowledge on the principles of basic manufacturing processes of steels. Identify materials used in standard industrial processes and practice through visual and simple tests. 3. Develop ideas and knowledge on the characteristics of common materials and identify the properties related to use. 4. Select materials and combinations of materials for specific tasks and state reasons for selection. Demonstrates the mechanisms of various types of corrosion and methods of surface protection of steels
