Programme Description | Intensive Care Medicine is a specialty providing care to patients with severe life threatening medical and surgical problems. It encompasses critical care patient management and procedural skills required for monitoring and managing organ impairment and failure This programme is aimed at Specialist Anaesthetists already working in Pacific Island Nations in Anaesthesia and/or Intensive care. It is designed to equip them with Critical Care advanced knowledge and skills to be expert and provide leadership in the development and management of Intensive care services within the Pacific region. This whole Programme is run at level 9 for which the prerequisite is having completed the Master of Medicine in Anaesthesia (MMED ANA) programme* at the FNU commencing in 2008 or thereafter. Of note there is significant Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) training included in this programme since 2008, however for full Master of Medicine (MMED) in Intensive care additional training and clinical experience in ICU is required, as per this programme. The 240 credits points required for MMED (ICM) programme (Dual specialist) will be titled ICM910 and ICM920. This requires 2 years’ full-time study which includes academic programme and clinical industry attachment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but due to the fact this is a dual specialty and candidates will still also practice some Anaesthesia, this programme allows flexibility with timing and completion of clinical attachments relative to timing of academic programme. *There is no pathway for direct entry into MMED (ICM) at this point (based on industry demand requiring additional ICM training for existing specialists in Anaesthesia as first priority) however this may be eventually developed. |
