Navigation Officer Cadet Training Program-Stage 3


This course covers the mandatory minimum requirements as set out in Reg. II/1, Sec. A-II/1, Table A-II/1 of STCW `2010 convention, as amended. It is based on the minimum knowledge required for certification of officer-in-charge of a navigational watch on ships of 500 GT or more.

The Ministry Course Approval Number is MTP/01/ND-101/2014.


On completion of the course trainees will have the knowledge, understanding and proficiency to;

  • Plan and conduct a passage and determine position
  • Maintain a safe navigational watch
  • Use of radar and ARPA to maintain safety of navigation
  • Respond to emergencies
  • Respond to a distress signal at sea
  • use the standard marine navigational vocabulary as replaced by the IMO standard marine
  • Communicational phrases and use English in written and oral form.
  • Transmit and receive information by visual signaling
  • Maneuver the ship
  • monitors the loading stowage, securing and unloading of cargoes and their care during the voyage
  • ensure compliance with pollution prevention requirements
  • maintain sea worthiness of the ship
  • apply medical first aid on board ship
  • monitors compliance with legislative requirements
  • prevents, control and fight fires on board
  • operate lifesaving appliance

Trimester I - Shore based training Duration 03 months
Trimester II - Shore based training Duration 03 months
Total Duration = - 6 Months


This course is open for those who comply with the minimum standards and requirements stipulated below.

  • The candidate shall not be less than 18 years of age and not more than 22 years of age at the time of closing applications. The HND reserves the right to waiver the upper limit of the age requirement in a case of a candidate displaying exceptional capabilities.
  • Three passes in FSLC or FEFE with the subjects Mathematics, Physics & English with at least 50% passing mark.
  • The candidate should be successful at the aptitude test and subsequent interviews conducted by the College.
  • Candidates who do not meet the standards expected under (c) would be considered for recruitment if they are sponsored by a shipping company for their sea phase-training. (A letter of sponsorship from the respective shipping company will be required).
  • The candidate should pass a Medical Fitness test and the Sight Test (6/6 vision in both eyes and Color test) to the satisfaction of the administration of the college.
