Government looks at the Fiji National University (FNU) to be a key player in developing and upgrading the workforce of the country says the Minister for Employment, Productivity & Industrial Relations, Honourable Jone Usamate.

Speaking at the inaugural Alumni Homecoming Weekend dinner, the Minister said FNU has an important role to play for Fiji.

“The University has played this role and this must continue to improve, to innovate and to ensure that it produces what this country needs for the on-going developments and for the future. FNU has had a big impact on society and today it is this ambition that connects us all and resonates into the future.”

The Honourable Minister said the alumni are the most visible indicator of performance for any university.

“A university’s success is always measured by the quality of teaching and the levels of success attained by graduates once they are out in the world of work. It is measured by what those who have graduated from the University are able to achieve.

“Alumni can also play a key role in guiding current students in their choice of career. Alumni can function as a coaching network; can offer personal real world insights from graduate perspective on what new students need to look out for in the world for work.”

Honourable Usamate said the graduates of the university were a living testimony to everyone that graduates from a small country like Fiji, have the ability to make a positive impact in the world.

“You are Fiji National University’s legacy. As alumni, we all need to look at how we can contribute to the on-going work of the university and in that way contribute to the lives of its new graduates and to the country as a whole or may I say for the Pacific as a whole,” said Usamate.

The FNU Alumni Dinner was held at the Holiday Inn in Suva.
