BE101

Beginning to Intermediate English as a Second Language course is designed for those seeking to improve their Standard British English reading and writing skills to move forward with other academic courses. BE101 coursework addresses grammar concepts, expanding your vocabulary, reading actively, and basic writing strategies.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

• Recognise the 8 parts of speech and demonstrate when to use each;
• Apply active reading skills using context clues, pre-reading, and prediction;
• Enlarge your vocabulary of Standard British English terms commonly used in academic contexts; and
• Recognise sentence order and write a cohesive series of sentences on a personal narrative topic.

IE101

Intermediate English as a Second Language course is designed for learners at the Intermediate level, focused on developing your reading and writing skills using active reading, grammar exercises, and writing practice.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

• recognise past and present tense;
• apply active reading skills by skimming and questioning a text;
• enlarge your vocabulary of Standard British English terms commonly used in academic contexts; and
• write a cohesive series of sentences on a familiar topic demonstrating the difference between past and present tense.

UE101

English as a Second Language course is designed for learners at the Upper-Intermediate level, focused on improving reading and writing skills through active reading activities and academic writing practice.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

• recognize subject/verb and tense agreement;
• use strategies to enlarge your vocabulary of synonyms and antonyms;
• apply active reading skills by making inferences; and
• demonstrate the ability to write critically through a short essay.

Foundation Mathematics Proficiency Assessment

Foundation Mathematics Proficiency Assessment (FMPA) is an optional, non-credit, online diagnostic tool designed to help you assess your mathematical skills. Although it is not compulsory, we recommend every first-year student take advantage of this free-of-charge opportunity. If there are areas in the course assessment that you found difficult, you are most welcome to attend the Math Help Hub (MH2). Aside from this assessment, please feel free to attend the Math Help Hub (MH²) if there are topics you would just like to brush up.

Learning to Learn Online

Online learning is education that takes place over the internet. It is one of the fastest growing trends in educational uses of technology. Demand for flexible online courses has continued to increase as potential students seek to upskill, re-train, and undertake further study. At FNU, we want our students to be on par with current educational technology and maximise their learning experiences through innovative strategies. The Centre for Learning and Teaching Enhancement (CLTE) has designed the Learning to Learn Online (LTLO) course to assist students transition from traditional face-to-face learning to contemporary online modes of learning.

LTLO is an optional course designed to introduce you to the online learning environment and to your role as an online learner. This course will equip you with the knowledge and strategies to manage your online learning, plan online assignments, communicate with an online instructor, and manage your assignments.

All FNU students are encouraged to complete this course, which is free of charge, self-directed, and self-paced. This course is available in Moodle and will take approximately six hours to complete. After successful completion of the course, you will be awarded an electronic badge that will be displayed on your Moodle profile.

Learning with Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is the commitment to and demonstration of honest and moral behavior in an academic setting. At FNU, student academic integrity means acting with the virtues of honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility in learning. As a student it is important for you to act in an honest way, be responsible for your actions, and show fairness in every part of your work.

You maintain academic integrity by being diligent about understanding and following the rules about citations and references, working individually, being well-organised with good time management, and avoiding the temptation to cheat.

Learning with Academic Integrity (LAI) is an optional, non-credit course in Moodle for all FNU students to enable them better understand academic integrity regulations at FNU.

We want all first-year students to have a smooth transition into the FNU: your first-year success is our utmost priority.

Succeed@FNU, an online course, has been designed to assist you in identifying your potential to achieve your academic goals, become familiar with FNU’s expectations and regulations, learn about the support systems available at FNU, and the importance of taking care of yourself.

All first-year students are encouraged to complete this course, which is free of charge, self-directed, and self-paced. This course is available on Moodle.
