For Rabia Fareed Ibrahim, studying in a male-dominated field did not deter her from pursuing her dream in becoming an aircraft engineer.

The 20-year-old from the friendly North of Vanua Levu is a second-year student pursuing Certificate in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (Mechanical) (Level 4) at the Fiji National University’s Bonunaqwele Nadi Campus.

The former student of Labasa Sangam (SKM) College is among the growing number of females pursuing this programme.

Ibrahim shared that her interest in the programme began when she first saw an aircraft take off.

“I have always been curious about machines and how they operate. Seeing airplanes and learning about the technology behind them inspired me to pursue aviation mechanical studies. I was also motivated by the important role aircraft mechanics play in ensuring the safety and reliability of aircraft,” said Ibrahim.

She said as a female student in aviation, one challenge was seeing many males in the same field.

“Sometimes I feel that I have to work harder to prove my skills and confidence in technical tasks, however I overcame this by staying focused on my goals, working hard in my studies, and believing in my abilities.”

She said being in the aviation field was an opportunity she was grateful for knowing fully that the industry plays an important role in global transportation and safety.

“Women in aviation makes a difference by bringing new skills, perspectives, and ideas to the industry. Their contributions as engineers, pilots, and technicians help improve innovation, teamwork, and safety in aviation. By succeeding in this field, we can also inspire more young women to pursue careers in aviation,” she added.

Her advice to young women and girls who aspire to work in this field someday is ‘do not let other people’s opinions stop you. Trust yourself, believe in your abilities, and never be afraid to follow your dreams’.
