Western Division Students Explore Careers at FNU Open Day

The Fiji National University (FNU) today welcomed more than 4,488 students from 47 schools across the Western Division to its highly anticipated Open Day, held simultaneously at the Bonunaqwele Campus in Nadi and Natabua Campus in Lautoka under the theme “Crafting Futures Together.”

At Bonunaqwele Campus, 1,947 students from 18 schools in Sigatoka and Nadi explored study options, while 2,541 students from 29 schools representing Lautoka, Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki gathered at Natabua Campus. The large turnout underscored the event’s role in shaping career pathways for Fiji’s future workforce.

FNU’s College of Humanities, Education and Law Dean, Professor Mesake Dakuidreketi, highlighted that FNU goes beyond academics.

“Our programmes evolve to meet industry and community needs. It’s not just textbooks; it’s hands-on experience. From journalism students partnering with local media to teacher training that reaches rural and maritime villages, FNU equips students for real-world success,” he said.

Sustainability and inclusivity were central themes, with the Open Day welcoming 34 students from the Nadi Centre for Special Education, who were inspired by vocational pathways including hospitality, front office, and aviation.

For many students, the day was transformative. Year 12 student Ranisha Ram of Sigatoka Methodist College shared, “Before today, I wasn’t sure of my future. After visiting the booths, I know I want to become a chef.”

The FNU Open Day provided students, teachers, and parents with valuable insights into the university’s wide range of programmes, inspiring them to dream big and plan their future careers.
