Fiji National University’s (FNU) College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences Acting Dean Dr. Amelia Turagabeci expressed optimism for Timor-Leste’s future, highlighting national progress and urging the younger generation to take an active role in shaping the country’s continued development.

Dr. Turagabeci was speaking during the celebration of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste Independence Day, held last Friday.

“We acknowledge the sacrifices made by the Timorese people in their struggle for freedom and self-determination. The courage and determination of the resistance fighters, along with the resilience of the people in the face of adversity, remain an enduring testament to their spirit,” she stated.

“We also recognise and sincerely thank the international community for its unwavering support and assistance during the transition to independence.”

“At FNU’s CMNHS, we celebrate the progress and achievements of our Timor-Leste students. Between 2004 and 2005, more than 50 students from Timor-Leste graduated from the Fiji School of Medicine, now known as CMNHS. Our alumni have gone on to contribute significantly to various sectors, including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic development.”

Dr. Turagabeci encouraged the students of Timor-Leste to continue contributing to the nation’s progress, expressing hope for a bright future for the country and its people.

“I would like to conclude with a call for unity, perseverance, and a continued commitment to building a stronger and more prosperous nation,” she said.

Timor-Leste student Dr. Pascoal Pinto reflected on the day as an opportunity not only to remember the journey but also to celebrate their culture, honour their heroes, and share their pride with friends and communities from all walks of life.

“Today marks more than just a date on the calendar; it is a powerful reminder of the courage, resilience, and unity of the Timorese people. On May 20th, 2002, after decades of struggle and sacrifice, East Timor officially became the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, reclaiming its sovereignty and identity as a free nation,” Dr. Pascoal said.
