The Fiji National University’s (FNU) social science programme opens up students’ imaginations by providing them with an opportunity to explore the variety of social science disciplines that will prepare them for employment in a broad range of careers.

According to the Head of School, Arts & Humanities at College of Humanities and Education (CHE), Dr Mumtaz Alam, FNU’s Bachelor of Applied Social Science programme prepares students with the skills necessary to deal with development and societal transformation.

“Social sciences are essential for improving systems and organisations that affect the lives of people every day. This course is designed to provide a more credible foundation for assessing our social and policy arenas, which can help in improving the systems to encourage civic participation and engagement,” said Dr Alam.

“Careers churning from this undergraduate programme are broad and varied, and some common areas of employment include social research, management and policy work for the government and non-government agencies. Whatever your chosen career path, you will graduate from FNU with work-ready skills and transferable attributes that are attractive to employers.”

Dr Alam said the distinctive feature of the programme is that it equips students with practical skills in designing, conducting and disseminating research.

“This skill set will enable FNU graduates to be proactive leaders across multiple societal, cultural and economic sectors that require interdisciplinary research talent.”

“Through the core and elective subjects, students will explore the exciting complexities of human social experience and learn to apply the social science research methodologies to the societies in which we exist,” he said.

Dr Alam adds in the Pacific that the Bachelor of Applied Social Science programme represents a new social science paradigm.

“For the most part, social science education has been delivered in silos or through a loosely defined alternative known as a double major. This programme is novel in that it provides a viable and far more practical option than the traditional social science degrees offered at other universities. ”

“The programme also serves as the foundation for the new postgraduate diploma in social policy programme offered at FNU,” stated Dr Alam.

The programme will be available at Natabua Campus, Lautoka, Nasinu, and Labasa campuses via face-to-face/blended and online learning.
