Nineteen-year-old Sonal Deepak Singh has always loved working with computers and solving complex Maths problems, so it comes as no surprise that he aims to pursue programmes in these fields at the tertiary level.
The Sigatoka native has enrolled at Fiji National University’s College of Humanities and Education (CHE) to study Bachelor of Education (Secondary) in Mathematics and Computer Science.
“I love both Maths and Computer Studies and hope to pass on my knowledge and passion to younger students. Not all students like Maths but I believe that a good math teacher can find innovative ways to get students interested in this subject,” he said.
According to Singh, he had a dream to become a mathematics teacher since he was a child.
“In my class, I was always assisting my friends who found maths challenging, and I was able to make them understand multiple ways to solve problems and use alternate methods to understand difficult concepts,” he said.
The former Lomawai Secondary School student said that it was a worthwhile journey to travel to FNU, Natabua Campus, Lautoka to get enrolled.
“We left home at 6.30 am so we could arrive on time to receive my offer letter and complete all the enrolment formalities,” he said.
Singh said he wanted to follow the footsteps of his two siblings who are FNU graduates.
“I wanted to pursue studies at FNU because of the practical experience I will gain before graduating,” he said.
“I had excellent mathematics teachers when I was at school, and they have been a real inspiration for me, and similarly I want to make a difference and be memorable in the lives of young people once I start teaching,” said Singh.
Singh is looking forward to beginning classes at FNU, Natabua Campus from the 3rd of next month.
