More than 20,000 people attended the Fiji National University (FNU) Open Day across four campuses, marking the largest attendance at the event to date.
The four campuses were Naduna, Namaka, Natabua, and Nasinu.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the FNU Open Day.
“We had over 20,000 attendees, including not just school students, but families as well. On the second day, it was heartening to see families participating. They had a wonderful day,” Professor Nabobo-Baba said.
“There was something for everyone. Parents had the opportunity to speak with lecturers and students about the courses their children plan to pursue. Nasinu campus recorded more than 10,000 attendees on the first day.
“We had eight special schools that attended including two kindergartens and that showed that children are already starting to make a decision on what programmes to study when they enter FNU.”
Professor Nabobo-Baba emphasised the value of the 2024 FNU Open Day.
“The event offered students a unique opportunity to gain firsthand insights into campus life, ask questions, get clarifications, and learn about the academic programmes available.”
“The FNU served about 16,000 individuals last year. This year, we saw significant interest from schools and former students eager to further their education and this was showed in the number of those that attended.”
One parent, Jone Ravuikadavu, brought his three daughters, Pearl, Emele, and Josivini, to the second day of the Open Day.
Ravuikadavu said that even though his children are still in primary school, the Open Day provided them with valuable exposure to hands-on courses at a young age.
He added that his children enjoyed the live animal display at the College of Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry booth.
About 500 student tour guides assisted the attendees, providing valuable support throughout the event.
