Hundreds of eager students flocked to the Fiji National University’s (FNU), Derrick Campus to get acquainted with the 2023 academic year at FNU.
An empty seat could not be found on campus as students and parents listened attentively to the College of Engineering, Science and Technology’s (CEST) presentations last Friday.
The first seat to be filled was by Aryan Kumar, who excitedly arrived at the venue two hours before the scheduled Orientation.
From Naria in Rakiraki, the former Penang High School student applied for a programme majoring in Industrial Arts during the FNU Roadshow held at the Rakiraki Market two weeks ago.
“My father is a fisherman while my mum stays home. I am the eldest in my family and I will be the first in my family to graduate with a Degree once I complete my studies,” Kumar said proudly.
The 19-year-old encouraged students to study hard and be dedicated to their goals to turn their academic dreams into successful careers.
Dean CEST, Professor Tibor Pasinszki said that it was positive to see an increase in the number of students interested in studying at the College.
“Our continuously changing technical world requires trained people, specialists, designers, and developers who can build, operate, maintain, and implement new technologies. Fiji has a bright future in terms of Science and Technology, as I see a lot of students’ enthusiasm at today’s Orientation programme,” he said.
“As the College of the National University, CEST will strive for excellence in developing students to become engineers, scientists, technologists, and specialists of many other successful professions.”
FNU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lyn Karstadt also welcomed the new students to the FNU family.
“As you embark on your tertiary studies, please remember your network of support who are banking on your success. This includes your parents, partners, children, friends, and sponsors,” Prof Karstadt said.
“Be diligent in your studies so that you – and everyone around you – will be proud of your time at FNU.”
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching), Professor Lisa Harrison added that University learning encouraged students to be more independent and critical to realise their full potential in life.
“I know all of you must be excited and eager to begin tertiary studies. For some, you may feel nervous and not quite sure of what to expect,” she shared.
“I look forward to the fresh ideas, energy, and participation you will contribute to the University.”
FNU’s Fiji Maritime Academy (FMA) will host its Orientation Programme at Nasese campus tomorrow, 13 February 2023 from 8AM.
