The University campaign will begin next week at 30 primary schools in Suva, Lautoka and Labasa from April 24-28 next week to Year 7 and 8 students.
It is never too early to begin discussions with students regarding their tertiary education studies so that they are better able to plan their study pathways.
The Fiji National University (FNU), College of Humanities and Education (CHE) Associate Dean (Learning & Teaching), Dr Victor Alasa believes that the inaugural Primary School Awareness Programme is an opportunity to gradually begin creating awareness about the University’s programmes and services.

“This is an opportunity that will provide an interface between our budding academics and future FNU students. Therefore, this is a welcome development,” Dr Alasa said.
“There is no perfect time to do this. They are the foundation for the future as the future starts right there with unlimited possibilities. Hence, this awareness programme is apt.”
Dr Alasa is a seasoned educator with over 20 years of expertise in delivering contemporary teaching and learning activities in higher education institutions in the field of special and inclusive education, educational research, and educational policy and planning.
He has teaching experience across primary, secondary and special education schools in both Africa and the Pacific Region.
Dr Alasa further stated that he expects an overwhelming response and positive feedback from the students participating in these sessions.

“I am expecting a massive mobilisation of our collective interest towards this project of the future. This will begin to yield its dividend soon.”
“To students, FNU has got you covered from Education to Engineering, to Medicine, to Agriculture, and whatever your aspiration may be. Just dream it, and we shall help you leverage our state-of-the-art facilities and resources to accomplish your dreams,” he shared.
FNU Manager Outreach, Vishal Lal added that the awareness campaign will set a guideline for students at an early age to assist them in choosing the right career path.
“As the national University, we feel that it is very important that we start sharing information about career opportunities, study pathways from the primary school level so students can begin thinking about and planning their future,” Lal said.
“This campaign was initiated from observations where we’ve met Year 12 and 13 students who were still undecided on their career ambitions, or those who may have decided and realised later that they were undertaking a different subject combination from what was required at tertiary level.”
