Dr Subashni Kumar
Fiji National University (FNU) esteemed academic Dr Subashni Kumar has officially launched her research book on Hindi literature last weekend.
This follows her attainment securing first place at the International Hindi Playwriting Competition held last year.
The College of Humanities, Education and Law Assistant Professor in Hindi at the School of Communication, Language and Literature, scooped the award in the Asia/Australia geographical category, which featured playwrights from around the globe, aimed to promote Hindi playwriting and showcase the ability to write in Hindi on diverse topics.
The launch of her research book will focus on Professor Subramani’s Fiji Hindi novels Dauka Puraan and Fiji Maa.
Dr Subashni said Hindi literature held a significant and cherished place in Fiji, as it was deeply intertwined with the cultural identity and heritage of the Indo-Fijian community.
“The presence of Hindi literature in Fiji reflects the long history of the Indian diaspora in the country, with roots going back to the indentured labourers who arrived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries,” said Dr Subashni.
“Academic institutions like FNU provide a platform for the study and promotion of Hindi language and literature.”
Dr Subashni also highlighted the importance of literature in helping preserve our unique cultural heritage during her address at the book launch, which was part of the 75th Anniversary Celebrations of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).
