The COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the need to prioritize and understand the health of the community. Fiji National University’s (FNU) senior academic Dr Masoud Mohammadnezhad believes this provides prospective students with an ideal opportunity to join the Bachelor of Health Promotion programme to learn and promote individual health and community well-being.

The three-year Bachelor of Health Promotion programme is offered by FNU’s College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (CMNHS).

Associate Professor, Dr Mohammadnezhad said Bachelor of Health Promotion is an area of study for work and research that identifies health needs and targets strategies at an individual, community and population level.

“This degree will provide students with an understanding of the key issues affecting the health of populations. They will develop skills in obtaining, reviewing and analyzing health information; planning and managing a health programme or project; and in improving the health of populations,” stated Dr Mohammadnezhad.

“Bachelor of Health Promotion has its core role to provide enrolled students with the opportunities to develop the qualifications in terms of the academic knowledge, professional, behaviours, attitudes and skills to enter into the profession of health promotion in the Pacific region,” he added.

Through identifying determinants of health using innovative research approaches the Bachelor of Health Promotion graduate will be able to assist people in different settings. The programme was introduced to respond to the increasing burden of diseases related to lifestyle in Fiji and the Pacific Region.

“Most of our graduates have found work in the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MoHMS), International Organizations such as the World Health Organisation and the Pacific Community (SPC) as Health Policy Developer’s, Surveillance Officer’s, Research Officer’ and Assistants and Health Educators.”
