The Fiji National University (FNU) proudly hosted a delegation from the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS) of China at its Nasinu Campus on Tuesday 26 August 2025.
The visit aimed to strengthen collaboration across academic and cultural fields, including language training, Pacific studies, sustainable trade initiatives, and joint research projects.
FNU’s College of Humanities, Education and Law (CHEL) Associate Professor, Dr Lavinia Tiko, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership.

“At FNU, we believe education is the cornerstone of progress, unity, and mutual understanding. Our collaborations with GDUFS exemplify our commitment to fostering global connections and shared knowledge,” she said.
Dr Tiko added that under CHEL, the university is committed to nurturing future leaders, promoting cultural exchange, and advancing interdisciplinary research.
“Education, for us, is more than individual achievement; it is a vital pathway towards sustainable development and international cooperation. That is why partnerships like this are so valuable.”
She noted that GDUFS’s reputation for excellence in language training, cultural studies, and international relations aligns closely with FNU’s vision.
“This partnership broadens our horizons and deepens our engagement with the international community, creating opportunities for both our students and staff,” Dr Tiko highlighted.
Currently, seven Chinese students are enrolled at FNU in the English as a Second Language programme, reflecting the ongoing exchange of knowledge and culture.

GDUFS Vice-President, Mr Shen Minghao, expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome.
“Today’s visit signifies our shared commitment to fostering understanding and collaboration. Our focus on Chinese and English language training, Pacific studies, and sustainable trade initiatives is vital for promoting cross-cultural dialogue, regional stability, and economic development,” he said.
Mr Shen also noted that GDUFS currently hosts 14 students from Pacific Island nations in the fields of humanities and education, with plans to expand exchange programmes into other disciplines.
“We are committed to delivering high-quality education that prepares students for an interconnected world. The exchange of ideas and cultural perspectives enriches both our institutions and communities,” he added.
Both universities affirmed their commitment to exploring opportunities for joint research, academic exchanges, and collaborative projects that will benefit future generations.
