A new collaboration will be structured between the Fiji National University (FNU) and the Fiji Correction Services (FCS) to forge several key objectives, leveraging the strengths of each partner to benefit the inmates and society.

While the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed this year between the two parties, it facilitates the path for the Fiji Government Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Policy to serve as a strategic framework for the proposed newly formed collaboration.

This relationship was further strengthened after a courtesy meeting between the FNU’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Unaisi Nabobo- Baba and the newly appointed FCS Commissioner, Dr Jalesi Nakarawa, a former Law Lecturer at FNU.

As part of the discussion, Prof Nabobo-Baba said FNU would be providing accredited educational programmes and certifications.

“The certification and qualifications provided by the university on achievements through FNU-logoed certificates. This partnership can enhance employability, reduce stigma, and support the successful reintegration of inmates into society,” she said.

The FNU’s collaboration with international institutions and universities birthed remarkable concepts waiting to be executed aligned with our Strategic Plan 2024-2026.

“FNU to collaborate with Fiji Correction Services on how it can implement the same concept in Thailand prison – focusing on Eco – Tourism. The same on certain programs to be introduced at FCS in collaboration with the College of Southern Nevada and Fiji National University.”

She added a potential partnership with FCS to see a development of the university’s vacant piece of land in Navua.

The university can provide programmes such as Basic Finance Short Course for Inmates, Hospitality Courses for inmates and other courses tailored made by colleges where inmates can graduate with a Certificate of Attainment.
