The Fiji National University (FNU), through its School of Dentistry and Oral Health (SDOH), is once again partnering with local and international organisations to deliver critical dental and medical care to underserved rural communities.
The 2025 Health Outreach initiative is taking place in the provinces of Serua-Namosi this week, with more than 200 patients expected to be treated each day.
The outreach will provide essential oral and general health services to communities with limited access to care.
The project has been made possible through generous grants from the FDI World Dental Development Fund, administered via the Fiji Dental Association, and the International College of Dentists. These funds have enabled the purchase of portable dental equipment, significantly expanding service capacity and volunteer participation.
Additional support is being provided by the Fiji Ministry of Health and Medical Services, who are contributing local volunteers and FNU staff and students from the dental programme are actively engaged in delivering care on the ground.
FNU teams also continue their close collaboration with the Seventh-day Adventist Church, particularly through the 10,000 Toes Campaign, Hope Clinic, and the Granite Bay SDA Church in Sacramento, USA. These faith-based partners are providing medical and dental volunteers, along with equipment and materials critical to the outreach’s success.
This marks the second collaboration between FNU and these partners.
In 2023, a similar Health Outreach initiative provided medical and dental care to over a thousand patients, earning widespread appreciation from the communities served.
“We are proud to again be working alongside such committed local and international partners,” said Dr Osea Dukuno, Head of the School of Dentistry and Oral Health at FNU.
“This initiative reflects our shared commitment to strengthening health equity, building workforce capacity, and reaching those most in need.”
FNU remains committed to community-based learning, public service, and advancing equitable healthcare access through collaborative partnerships that deliver sustainable impact.
