Posted On: December 20, 2024
Suva, Fiji:  The Fiji National University (FNU) is reaffirming its commitment to developing Fiji’s agricultural sector by expanding its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) offerings. As agriculture remains a vital pillar of the Fijian economy, FNU’s investment in specialised training programmes ensures that the next generation of agricultural leaders will be equipped with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to drive the industry forward.
TVET plays a crucial role in enhancing the workforce’s skills, offering hands-on training that aligns directly with industry needs. Agriculture, as one of the main employment sectors in Fiji, requires skilled professionals who understand the complexities of sustainable farming, animal health, fisheries management, and forestry. The demand for qualified professionals in these fields has never been greater, and FNU is responding by introducing a range of new programmes for the 2025 academic year.
New Courses Offered for 2025:
Starting in 2025, FNU will launch new and enhanced TVET programmes at key locations in Fiji, providing students with specialised training in critical areas of agriculture:
Ba Campus (New Programmes):
  • Diploma in Animal Health (Level 5)
  • Diploma in Agriculture (Level 5)
Labasa Campus (New Programmes):
  • Diploma in Fisheries (Level 5)
  • Diploma in Agriculture (Level 5)
  • Diploma in Forestry (Level 5)
Namaka Campus (New Programme):
  • Diploma in Agriculture (Level 5)
These new programmes are designed to equip students with both the expertise and practical experience needed to excel in the agriculture industry. From animal health and sustainable farming practices to fisheries management and forestry conservation, FNU’s updated curriculum focuses on providing students with skills that are directly applicable to real-world agricultural challenges.
TVET programmes at FNU prioritise practical learning and the development of technical skills, ensuring that graduates are prepared to meet the demands of Fiji’s evolving agricultural sector.
“FNU’s new agricultural programmes reflect our ongoing commitment to supporting Fiji’s sustainable agricultural development,” said Dr Kaliova Ravuiwasa, Dean of the College of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry (CAFF).
“These new diplomas align with national goals to increase agricultural productivity, ensure food security, and promote rural development. Our objective is to provide students with the tools and training necessary to contribute meaningfully to Fiji’s agricultural future.”
Supporting Local Communities and National Growth
The introduction of these programmes is particularly significant for Fiji’s rural and coastal communities, where agriculture is central to livelihoods. By expanding its offerings in Ba, Vanua Levu, and Namaka, FNU is bringing education directly to these regions, closing the gap between urban and rural areas in terms of access to quality education.
“FNU is not just about providing education; it’s about empowering our people, especially those in rural communities, with the skills and knowledge to transform their industries and their lives,” added Dr Ravuiwasa.
“By offering these programmes in different regions, we are making education more accessible and ensuring that agricultural expertise is spread across the country.”
As the agricultural sector continues to play an increasingly vital role in Fiji’s economy, the importance of skilled professionals cannot be overstated. FNU’s TVET programmes in agriculture are designed to nurture the next generation of agricultural innovators and leaders, equipped to address the challenges of climate change, sustainable farming, and food security.
Applications for the 2025 academic year are now open, and FNU encourages prospective students to apply for these exciting new programmes.
