A deep desire to help people have access to justice, especially those from marginalized communities, prompted 22-year-old Natasha Saiyad, pursue Bachelor of Laws programme at the Fiji National University (FNU).

The final-year student is a passionate community advocate in her home town of Sigatoka and hopes that through her education she will be able to make a positive influence in society.

“I have always wanted to become a lawyer and help people, especially the needy and underprivileged.  I know that not everyone has access to legal services, so when I graduate I intend to assist these people through my services,” said Saiyad.

Since joining the FNU Law programme, Saiyad says she has gained more confidence as a person as well as enhanced her public speaking and interaction skills.

“Besides the numerous and diverse lessons that I have gained, I feel I can now easily express myself.  This programme has expanded my knowledge in understanding the various elements of law such as common, constitution, criminal and public law,” shared Saiyad.

“My colleagues and I work on various group projects and activities which enable us to share knowledge, see different perspectives and learn new things,” she added.

Maintaining a well-balanced study and personal life is important. Saiyad believes perseverance and commitment are key to achieving one’s goals.

“Not all days are the same. There will be a time when you will have fun with your peers and then there are times when you will be juggling to complete multiple assignments. Sometimes you also get homesick but you have to continue on your journey as all these things will have a reward in the end,” shared the FNU student.

“I would like to thank my father Saiyad Mohammad Farukh who has been there throughout and has been supporting me financially and emotionally, in empowering me to be the best version of me,” said Saiyad.

The law student believes respecting parents, being humble and grateful for what you have are important pillars which provide growth to people as they chase their aspirations in life.
