The Fiji National University (FNU) is joining millions around the world in commemorating the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign that calls for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.

The 16-day international observance runs annually from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, through to 10 December, Human Rights Day.

As part of this global movement, FNU is reaffirming its commitment to fostering safe, respectful and inclusive environments for all students and staff, in line with its Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Policy.

FNU Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba said the campaign is an important reminder of the collective responsibility institutions have in promoting safety and respect.

“A safe and respectful FNU is not negotiable. Ending gender-based violence is everyone’s responsibility, every day, in every space,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

Throughout the 16 days, the University will feature a dedicated social media awareness campaign highlighting reflections, messages and commitments from FNU leadership, staff, students, and members of the disability community. These messages reinforce values of equality, non-discrimination and zero tolerance for any form of violence or harassment.

FNU’s Manager Public Relations and Communications, Navinesh Kumar, emphasised the importance of continued awareness and advocacy.

“Gender-based violence remains a serious issue globally and locally. At FNU, we remain committed to promoting dignity, safety and inclusion for all, during these 16 days and throughout the year,” said Kumar.

FNU encourages all members of the University community to stand against gender-based violence, support survivors, and help create safer spaces for all.
