The Fiji National University (FNU) is profoundly saddened by the recent discovery of an abandoned newborn at one of the hostels at Natabua Campus in Lautoka. This has been deeply troubling for the entire University community.

FNU is fully cooperating with the Fiji Police Force and other relevant authorities as investigations continue. The University remains committed to supporting these efforts, and our immediate concern is for the safety and wellbeing of both the newborn and the mother.

Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nii-K Plange, described the situation as heartbreaking and deeply emotional.

“Our hearts go out to the innocent child and mother, and we pray they both receive the love, care, and protection they deserve.

At the same time, we are gravely concerned for the mother and we hope she is safe, and we want her to know she is not alone, and that we are here to provide her the  assistance she requires should she wish,” said Professor Plange.

“We are incredibly thankful to the students and staff who acted quickly and compassionately, with the spirit of the duty of care that FNU upholds, and to the authorities who responded with urgency and care.”

Professor Plange emphasised the need for greater awareness, empathy, and support for students who may be experiencing personal or emotional hardship.

“As a university, we are also reflecting on this and how much more support to our students we can provide, especially those who may feel overwhelmed, isolated, or unsure of where to turn. No one should feel that they are alone in facing difficult life circumstances.”

He urged students to access the free, confidential counselling and health services offered across all campuses or speak with other staff members that they feel comfortable with.

“To any student who may be struggling—emotionally, mentally, or personally—please know that support is here for you. Reach out. Our counsellors and UniClinic staff are trained to listen, care, and guide you without judgement.”

FNU also reaffirms its commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and caring environment for all.

The University will continue to work with the relevant authorities and will share further updates when appropriate. In the meantime, our thoughts remain with both the newborn and the mother during this painful and difficult time.
