Participants at the Haematology Workshop

The Fiji National University (FNU) has reached a new milestone in the field of medical diagnostics by hosting its first-ever Haematology Skills Workshop, designed to enhance the expertise of laboratory professionals in blood film morphology and diagnostics.

The two-day workshop, currently underway at the Fiji National University’s College of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Sciences’ (CMNHS) Pasifika Campus, is facilitated by Associate Professor Donna Ross and Ailie Ross from James Cook University, Australia. The event has brought together medical laboratory professionals from across the country, reflecting a shared commitment to improving diagnostic services in Fiji’s healthcare system.

Speaking at the opening, Dr Aruna Devi, Associate Dean TVET and currently interim Dean at CMNHS, welcomed the participants and emphasised the importance of manual skills in an increasingly automated field.

“In an age of increasing automation, the skill of manual blood film review remains an essential competency, one that calls for sharp observation, critical thinking, and continuous learning,” said Dr Devi.

“This workshop provides a unique opportunity to refine those skills, explore a range of morphological features, and strengthen the quality of diagnostic practices in our laboratories.”

Haematological diagnostics play a crucial role in determining a patient’s health status and are often the first indicators of serious conditions such as anaemia, infections, or haematological malignancies. The workshop combines theoretical sessions with hands-on laboratory practice, allowing participants to review both common and rare case presentations, including cases brought in by participants themselves.

Dr Devi encouraged active participation, noting the interactive and collaborative nature of the workshop.

With practical sessions held in CMNHS’s teaching laboratories, participants are encouraged to bring their unique case slides for review and discussion with facilitators.

This pioneering initiative underscores the importance of ongoing professional development and collaboration in strengthening healthcare systems. The event also highlights the growing partnership between Fiji and academic institutions in the region, such as James Cook University, to build capacity and improve medical education.
