FNU hosts Careers Teachers at Nasinu Campus

Posted On: March 23, 2023

More than 60 high school careers teachers in the Central and Eastern division participated in the Fiji National University’s (FNU) Careers Teachers Workshop yesterday to gain further insight into the University’s programmes and entry requirements, services available to students and the application process.

The first-ever nation-wide Careers Teachers Workshop organised by FNU was also conducted last week at the Ba and Namaka campuses for teachers in the Western Division.

The next workshop will be held at Naduna Campus in Labasa tomorrow, Friday, 24 March.

Waidina College Principal, Osea Naicibaciba said the Careers Teachers Workshop was beneficial as the teachers gained additional knowledge to share with students.

“I would like to thank FNU for conducting this workshop and addressing the gaps and queries we had. We are now well-informed about the career pathways at FNU,” he shared.

“Most of the students are still unsure about what to do when they finish high school and are not aware of the opportunities available to them. This is why some of the students are left out or are discouraged to continue their studies.”

“Now, we know that FNU provides affordable courses and everyone has a chance to pursue tertiary studies. It is great that this awareness starts early so that students are able to choose their subject combinations accordingly.”

“The workshop was relevant and timely, and it will be very beneficial especially for our students. The careers teachers really needed this awareness to educate students about the programmes and services which are offered at FNU,” he added.

FNU’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, highlighted the important role careers teachers’ play in the lives of their students.

“Teachers matter a lot. The influence teachers have in shaping their students is a powerful tool that can dictate the path students take in life,” Professor Nabobo-Baba shared.

“Our students are the true future of Fiji and to ensure they are on the right track, we must nourish them, so they are developed and remain focused on their goals and dreams. Without teachers we cannot achieve this.”

“We need to guide our students to ensure they are progressing towards a successful career pathway. Not all students will be able to achieve the academic goals directly. This is where career teachers can assist students by providing alternative pathways.”

“This workshop will help teachers to guide their students well while choosing the career paths in the future.”

Teachers in the Maritime zones can also join the virtual session on April 7 from 9am to 11am.
