Atish Sami, a graduate of the Executive Masters in Business Administration (EMBA) programme at the Fiji National University (FNU) in 2023, embodies a deep passion for education and personal growth.

His story is a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and the unwavering support of a university community that believes in its students.

Sami’s journey with FNU began in 2000 when he enrolled in a Certificate in Agricultural Engineering at the Fiji Institute of Technology, the precursor to FNU’s College of Engineering and Technical Vocational Education and Training (CETVET).

Two years later, he pursued a Trade certificate in Plant Maintenance, marking the start of a long and eventful relationship with the institution.

After a 17-year break, he returned to FNU to pursue his dream of an EMBA, and with two years of hard work, he graduated with distinction in 2023.

Currently, he is pursuing a Masters by Thesis Higher Degree Research (HDR), a testament to his unwavering commitment to academic excellence.

“I was immersed in a vibrant learning environment that encouraged exploration, innovation, and collaboration,” Sami said, reflecting on his time at FNU.

“The support I received from the faculty and staff was instrumental in my success.”

“Their mentorship and encouragement pushed me to aim higher and exceed my own expectations.”

The 46-year-old’s words are echoed by his later father Bal Ram, who, despite being a farmer, instilled in his son the value of education from a young age.

“I always dreamed of attaining an Executive Masters in Business Administration,” he said.

“I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but I was driven by a desire to elevate my professional skills and broaden my understanding of strategic business management.”

His journey was not without its challenges. Balancing the demands of the program with his professional responsibilities and personal commitments was a constant struggle.

“I developed a structured routine and adopted tools like planners and task management apps to stay organised,” he recalled.

“I also made a conscious effort to communicate with my employers and family about my commitments, which helped create a supportive environment that allowed me to focus on my studies.”

Despite these challenges, the father of a 17-year-old persevered, and the experience transformed him in ways he could never have imagined.

“Academically, the rigorous curriculum and hands-on learning opportunities equipped me with practical skills and in-depth knowledge in my field of study,” he said.

“Courses like HRM 803 and projects such as FIN 910 allowed me to apply theoretical concepts in real-world scenarios, giving me the confidence to handle professional challenges.”

His experience at FNU was not just about academic growth; it was also about personal development.

“The university provided a well-rounded academic environment that challenged me to think critically and approach problems from diverse perspectives,” he said.

“I developed a strong ability to analyse complex problems, think critically, and identify innovative solutions.”

“Graduating with an EMBA has positively influenced my career trajectory since graduation,” he said, his voice filled with emotion.

“I developed a broader perspective on business challenges and opportunities, enabling me to take on more complex roles.”

For those considering embarking on a similar journey, Sami encouraged students to dive into the curriculum enthusiastically and maximise every class, project, and assignment.

“The program is what you make of it, so stay focused, stay curious, and make the most of every opportunity,” he added.

He also emphasised the importance of building strong relationships with professors and classmates.

“Faculty members can offer invaluable guidance, and collaborating with peers can enhance your learning experience and broaden your perspectives.”

His story serves as a beacon of hope for mature students who are considering pursuing a higher education degree but may be daunted by the prospect.

Sami’s journey is a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and the unwavering support of a university community that believes in its students.
