In a passionate step towards inclusive education, the Fiji National University (FNU) conducted a transformative professional development workshop for special education teachers in Vanua Levu today.

This initiative, at FNU Naduna campus, brought together educators from various schools for an intensive workshop focused on inclusive teaching strategies.

“The workshop presents a valuable opportunity for FNU to engage with special schools. We are particularly enthusiastic about its potential impact in the Northern Division, especially in special education,” said Inise Tawaketini, a special education teacher from Nasavusavu Special School.

Tawaketini said it was about time a workshop for special education teachers was organised.

“There are currently no programmes designed specifically for students with special needs at the tertiary level, so it is a blessing to see an institution like FNU taking the initiative to organise this workshop.”

FNU’s Manager Outreach, Ella Bennion, highlighted the important role educators play beyond teaching.

“In special education, we go beyond being teachers; we serve as advocates, mentors, and champions for students who depend on us to help unlock their greatest potential,” she stated.

“The workshop, designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of special education professionals, provided an opportunity for participants to explore innovative strategies, best practices, and essential resources.”

Bennion explained that it was important to empower educators with the tools necessary to create inclusive and dynamic learning environments for all students.

“Through expert-led discussions, interactive sessions, and hands-on training, we aim to foster collaboration, encourage the exchange of experiences, and create a platform where knowledge leads to new opportunities for our students.” Participants were urged to fully engage in the workshop, leveraging the collective expertise available.

Bennion highlighted the importance of passion and dedication in driving meaningful change, calling on every attendee to actively contribute to the shared mission of advancing special education.

“We are here today because of our commitment to making a difference in the lives of students,” she said.

“Your passion is the driving force behind the progress we seek.”

The workshop is a pivotal moment for special education professionals to come together, share insights, and develop strategies to enhance the educational experience for students with special needs.

This event marks another step forward in the ongoing mission to ensure every student, regardless of their challenges, receives the support and opportunities they deserve to succeed.
