The Fiji National University’s (FNU) Nasinu Campus was filled with eager first-year students yesterday as the University commenced its Orientation Week for Semester 1 studies.

FNU’s College of Business, Hospitality and Tourism Studies (CBHTS) and College of Humanities and Education (CHE) conducted their respective College sessions at the 450-seat lecture theatre on campus.

Elenoa Valemei and her son Ropate Robi.

First-year student, Elenoa Valemei, stood out amongst the CBHTS students as she was accompanied by her 11-month-old son.

The 33-year-old said she had a busy schedule that started with her six-year-old daughter, Opal Cawani’s orientation programme at the Veiuto Primary School.

“I still made sure to attend my Orientation session, and after this, I will also prepare to attend my elder son David’s orientation at the Lelean Memorial School in Nausori,” she said.

Valeimei, who is originally from Vanua Levu, is enrolled in the Diploma in Office Administration (Level 5) programme.

“It was the first time for me to come to Fiji National University, and the session was very informative as we got to know about different services provided by FNU and where to go if you face any difficulties,” she said.

“After completing the course, I hope to secure employment.”

“My message to the others who want to attain tertiary education is to come with full commitment, dedication and passion.”

CBHTS Dean, Professor Arun Elias, motivated the students to do well in their academic studies.

“We at the College of Business, Hospitality and Tourism Studies want our students to be critical and creative thinkers. We want them to think critically and solve problems and we will develop our students to think outside the box, to become leaders in critical and creative thinking,” Professor Elias said.

The College of Humanities and Education Dean, Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba said it was important that the University set the right platform for the students.

“2023 is the year of optimism. It is also the year of success and the year of positive change.  At University, we all can excel, therefore it is important that we all engage and work hard towards our goals,” she said.

“It is important that all students should have a yearly plan so that you can work according to that and achieve all your goals. Learn to pray, learn to work, and plan your life.”

“It is vital that all students should prioritise their studies to succeed in your university life. Try hard in your life to achieve good grades in University.”

FNU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lyn Karstadt also welcomed students to their choice of university.

“Choosing the University that will help you turn your academic dreams into reality is a major decision, and I am honoured that you have chosen FNU as your home of learning. Being a University student means you have the freedom to follow your passion, discover your calling, become yourself and make new friends,” Professor Karstadt said.

FNU’s College of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (CAFF) will conduct its Orientation session at 9:30 AM today, 7 February at the Koronivia campus, followed by the Fiji Maritime Academy (FMA) at Nasese campus from 1:30 PM.
