Exceptional service win customers – Singh

Press Release Posted On: July 7, 2021

Manjeet Singh loves interacting with people, which is important in the service industry as happy customers equate to return business and recommendations to new clients.

Having an outgoing and friendly personality, Singh set his mind to work in the tourism sector and enrolled in the Certificate III in Restaurant Services programme at the Fiji National University (FNU).

According to Singh, the programme offered by FNU’s College of Business, Hospitality and Tourism Studies (CBHTS) has taught him essential skills on exceptional customer service.

“I like to meet new people and make friends, and this was a perfect opportunity for me to study something that would lead me to a rewarding career,” said Singh.

“I chose to study at FNU because the lecturers and tutors are experts in their fields with years of experience and have industry contacts to share with us. Also, they have taught me how to provide professional service in various food and beverage operations and to create positive first impressions in restaurants, cafes, and bars.”

“The one-year course has provided me with the theoretical knowledge and practical life skills required to work in the hotel, catering, and foodservice industries. The areas covered included table service, bar service, product knowledge and operating procedures, and effective communications.”

Currently working at one of the fast-food chains in Suva, Singh said his studies at FNU had prepared him for the realities of the job.

“I’m able to put to practice the knowledge gain at FNU at my workplace. FNU is renowned for delivering a balance between theory and hands-on skills, so instead of just sitting in lectures and writing long essays, we were provided with the opportunity to apply what we learnt to practical tasks and projects. The vocational learning is designed to prepare us for the real skills for real jobs.”

The former Gospel High school student adds that he always felt special during classes and practical sessions as instructors were always available to help and guide him.

“During practicals, we are divided into smaller groups, making it easier for us to know other students and collaborate on projects and tasks. In addition, we had the privilege to work at FNU’s Tiri Bar & Restaurant and gain invaluable experience preparing and serving lunch and dinner for paying customers.”

Singh’s advice to students is always to display a positive attitude and strive for success no matter what others say.

“If you want to do something in the hospitality industry, then go for it. My best advice is to learn with passion and intention and achieve your dreams.”
