To enhance alignment, coherence, and effectiveness in both teaching and learning, the College of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences (CMNHS) has undertaken a comprehensive curriculum mapping initiative.
More than 40 staff members from CMNHS participated in a one-day Curriculum Mapping Workshop, held in Nasese on Friday, 28 March 2025.
Professor Jayanatha Weerasinghe, Associate Dean for Learning & Teaching at CMNHS, emphasised their commitment to integrating curriculum mapping into both new and existing programmes.
“Our curriculum mapping training began ten years ago, and with the arrival of new faculty members, it is essential to revisit and reinforce this process. Experienced staff who have previously undergone training now can share their expertise with new colleagues,” Professor Weerasinghe stated.
He further highlighted the benefits of curriculum mapping for both new and experienced faculty members.
“New faculty members can gain valuable insights into how the curriculum is structured and how their courses fit within the broader programme. For experienced faculty, the workshop provides an opportunity to refine existing curriculum maps and share best practices.”
Professor Weerasinghe stressed the importance of curriculum mapping workshops in maintaining a dynamic and effective curriculum.
“These workshops empower faculty, enhance teaching and learning, and ensure that academic programs meet the highest standards of quality and accreditation.”
He expressed CMNHS’s willingness to support other colleges interested in implementing curriculum mapping.
“If the other Colleges wish to adopt curriculum mapping, we are more than happy to offer our guidance and support.”
He also emphasized the role of curriculum mapping in identifying gaps in content coverage, eliminating unnecessary overlaps, and highlighting areas for improvement.
“This process enhances the overall learning experience and prevents redundancy,” Weerasinghe said.
“By ensuring that learning objectives are clearly defined and systematically integrated into the curriculum, students benefit from a more structured and engaging learning experience,” he concluded.
