At a young age, Sereani Rokoloma Vuetibau was so fascinated about how thunder and lightning were produced.
This was the spark to achieving her dream in the years to come.
Vuetibau currently serves as the only Technical Assistant female in Electrical at the Fiji National University under the National Training and Productivity Centre, Naceva Campus in Lautoka.
The mother of three girls’ hails from Lasakau on Bau Island, while sharing maternal links to Kavala, Nakasaleka in Kadavu.
The former Natabua High School student is also an alumni of the NTPC pursuing her studies in Electrical Engineering.
“My interest in the electrical field began at an early age when I was curious about how thunder and lightning were produced. I was fascinated by the power of nature and wanted to understand how electricity worked,” she said.
“As I grew older, that curiosity developed into a desire to work in a field that was both practical and impactful. The moment I stepped into the electrical workshop during my training, I knew this was where I belonged.
“I enjoyed working with tools, solving technical problems, and seeing systems come to life through wiring and installation. That was when I confidently said, ‘yes, this is the field for me’.”
Prior to joining the FNU in 2024, Vuetibau was employed at the Fiji Sugar Corporation as an Electrical Fitter Mechanic. A field mainly dominated by men and where she believes it has carried her through to where she is today.
She said seeing other women thrive in technical fields motivates her to continue growing and representing women in trade jobs.
“Being a woman in a field mainly dominated by men can sometimes be challenging. There may be doubts or assumptions, but I have learned that competence, confidence, and consistency speak louder than words. I focus on my work, continue to improve my skills, and let my performance reflect my capability. Over time, respect is earned through dedication and professionalism,” she said.
Give To Gain
Vuetibau said she believed women continue to give their skills, knowledge, courage, and commitment to male-dominated industries gaining growth, leadership, experience, and confidence.
“At the same time, the industry gains diversity, innovation, and stronger representation. Inclusion benefits everyone,” she added.
“My message to young girls and women who are hesitant to enter male-dominated fields is simple: Do not limit yourself. If you are passionate about something, pursue it wholeheartedly. Equip yourself with knowledge, seek guidance, and believe in your abilities. The path may not always be easy, but it will be worth it. Your presence in these spaces will inspire others to follow.”
