Career Teachers Empowered at FNU Workshop

Posted On: April 10, 2025

Thirty-four career teachers from Sigatoka, Nadi, Lautoka and Ba participated in the 2025 Career Teachers’ Workshop held at the Fiji National University (FNU) Nadi Campus today.

Head of the FNU Namaka Campus in Nadi, Ateca Yavaca, reminded attendees of their vital role in equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and mindset necessary for making informed career choices.

She emphasised that the role of career teachers extends beyond advising, mentoring, and motivating students.

“Our responsibility is to prepare students to make sound career decisions by equipping them with the appropriate knowledge, skills, and mindset,” Yavaca stated.

“We acknowledge the challenges associated with career guidance, including limited resources, lack of exposure to diverse career paths, and students’ uncertainty regarding their interests.”

“However, these challenges also present opportunities for innovation. By utilising technology, engaging with industry professionals, and collaborating with parents and communities, we can offer more enriching and effective career education experiences.”

Yavaca encouraged teachers to adopt creative and proactive approaches in enhancing career guidance within schools.

“Let us remain committed to continuous learning, adaptation, and innovation. Our efforts not only shape the future of our students but also contribute significantly to the development of our society.”

Principal of Magodro Secondary School in Ba, Alumita Tobua Ciwanacagi, described the workshop as both empowering and inspiring.

“I believe workshops of this nature should be held regularly and extended to all school stakeholders across Fiji. It is important that they are well-informed with accurate and current information to effectively support students in their career decision-making process,” she said.

“One valuable insight I gained is that students applying for the Bachelor of Nursing programme must have completed Physics. This highlights the importance of students achieving strong academic results and selecting appropriate subjects from Year 11, especially if they intend to pursue degree-level studies.”

The workshop continues tomorrow with a dedicated session for special education teachers at the FNU Namaka Campus in Nadi.
