“Learning is not just limited to our island; there’s always a bigger picture out there,” says Mr Jonacani Kotobalavu.

A Primary teacher at Uciwai District School on Moala Island in the Lau Group, yesterday he led a group of students from Years 6 to 8 to the Careers Expo at Yasayasa Moala.

The one-week expo around the Lau group organised by the Ministry of Education brings together various stakeholders, including the Fiji National University (FNU).

“We are lucky to have these opportunities here in the maritime zone,” Mr Kotobalavu said.

“FNU and other institutions help open our students’ minds and broaden their horizons.”

At the expo, students visited many booths and explored different educational paths.

Mr Kotobalavu said it was important for the students to attend the expo as they prepare to transition to secondary school and beyond.

“After Year 8, they will go to secondary schools and to universities. Having FNU here is a big advantage.”

As an alumnus of the Fiji National University, having studied at the Koronivia campus, Mr Kotobalavu is passionate about the opportunities for students.

“This moment is important for our students to come and explore because they are building their futures,” he added.
