Ba, Fiji – A new wave of skilled farmers is emerging from the Fiji National University (FNU), as students from the College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (CAFF) at the Ba Campus proudly harvested crops they planted last semester.

The Certificate III in Agriculture students cultivated peanuts, dhania, and cabbage as part of their practical training. The harvest not only marked the reward of their hard work, but also demonstrated FNU’s commitment to producing graduates who are ready to strengthen Fiji’s food security and agricultural sustainability.

Alongside their field plots, the students are also managing a thriving nursery with around 500 kumquat seedlings, soon to be transplanted.

Course coordinator Alvin Lal said the initiative was designed to give students a complete understanding of the crop cycle, bridging theory with practical application.

“We want our students to not just learn the theory, but to get their hands in the soil and experience every stage of agricultural production. This builds confidence, nurtures innovation, and ensures they graduate with the job-ready skills our communities and industries need,” Mr Lal said.

College Dean, Dr Kaliova Ravuiwasa, said the Ba Campus initiative highlighted FNU’s role in shaping Fiji’s next generation of agricultural entrepreneurs.

“What we are seeing here is more than a student harvest, it is the beginning of a new era for agriculture in Fiji. These young men and women will go on to feed communities, support agribusinesses, and drive innovation in sustainable farming. FNU is proud to be planting the seeds of resilience and food security for our nation,” Dr Ravuiwasa said.

The harvested produce is sold to staff, students, and market vendors, reflecting the programme’s emphasis on practical entrepreneurship as well as technical training.

The Certificate III in Agriculture programme at FNU equips students with vital skills in sustainable farming, agribusiness, and problem-solving, preparing them to lead Fiji’s agricultural future.
