Dr Mumtaz Alam is a prominent elected member of the Fiji National University Council. He is an Associate Professor of History and Director of the Centre for Graduate Studies. He received his PhD from Aligarh Muslim University and worked at the Centre for Advanced Study Department of History before joining the Fiji National University in 2013. Dr. Alam served as Head of Department of History, Head of Department of Social Science, Head of School (Arts and Humanities) and Associate Dean for Teaching and learning at Fiji National University.
His research interests include medical history in South Asia and the Pacific and their connection with colonial and post-colonial contexts and interdisciplinary studies. Dr. Alam has maintained an impressive research and publication agenda, as shown by his publications in highly rated journals. Over the past few years, Dr. Alam has redirected his research skills into the emerging and relevant area of Climate Change adaptation and resilience. Dr Alam has published two books, ‘Health, Medicine, and Encounter of Cultures’ and ‘Rethinking Nationalism: Exploring Its Roots, Varieties and Theories’ and is working on a third one entitled ‘Colonial Fiji’s Legacy: Empire, Leprosy, and Lessons for the Modern Era’.
Dr Alam is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, London and a member of various professional bodies like the Indian History Congress (IHC), Pacific History Association (PHA), American Historical Association (AHA), Australian and New Zealand Society of the History of Medicine (ANZSHM), etc. He was awarded the Prize for Best Paper under the Science and Technology section in the Indian History Congress in 2011. He published many research papers in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters and is an active researcher. He is a reviewer of more than a dozen Scopus-indexed journals and sits as Chief Editor, Associate Editor and editorial board member of various international journals.
