The Fiji National University (FNU) has reaffirmed its dedication to addressing drug and substance abuse by hosting the Rapid Appraisal of Illicit Drug Abuse Survey Consultation.

The consultation is a joint initiative between the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, the Dean of the Centre for Graduate Studies, the Fiji National University Students’ Association (FNUSA), and the Office of Strategic Development Planning.

Its goal is to capture accurate data on substance use in FNU, which will then guide the creation of evidence-based policies and long-term solutions.

FNUSA President, Mohammed Iqbal, said the initiative reflects the university’s commitment to safeguarding young people and communities.

“This consultation is about finding sustainable, long-term solutions that prioritise the wellbeing of our communities and future generations. Let’s work together for a healthier, safer Fiji,” he said.

Ten FNUSA students have been trained to assist with the survey, ensuring student involvement in both the research process and the search for solutions.

All data collected will remain confidential and will be used to shape new strategies.

Department of Strategic Planning and Development Acting Director Rajendra Prasad highlighted the importance of the initiative given current trends.

“We are seeing an increase in drug use in Fiji, and it is vital that we understand what is happening on the ground. This data will help us extend and strengthen policies,” he said.

Mr Prasad confirmed that the survey is close to completion at the Nasinu Campus, with other campuses in the pipeline.

“The results will help us draft practical resolutions and policies. Most importantly, this consultation is about collaboration—bringing everyone together to address a national issue,” he added.

Dean of the Centre for Graduate Studies, Professor Nii-K Plange, also praised the collaborative spirit behind the project.

“This initiative is about pulling everyone together for a common cause. I want to sincerely thank the students, staff, and organisers for their tireless effort and commitment,” he said.

Professor Plange emphasised that the survey outcomes will directly inform its policies and programmes, ensuring that the university plays a leading role in building a healthier, drug-free Fiji.
