The Fiji National University (FNU) is honoured to host the “Harmony in Diversity: Islands Connected” art exhibition, a remarkable showcase of cultural exchange and artistic collaboration, on Wednesday, 13 August 2025, at the FNU Nasinu Campus. Organised by Rainbows in collaboration with the Macao Great Wall Calligraphers and Painters Association, this event highlights the enduring friendship and shared maritime heritage of Fiji and China.

The exhibition will feature 21 exquisite calligraphies, and painting works in scroll format, created by distinguished artists such as Guan Quanchang, founding President of the Macau Great Wall Artists Association, and Ruan Yuming, Director-General of the same association. Among the artworks is Guan’s “Zi Qi Dong Lai” (Auspicious Vapor from the East), a piece that symbolises the deep-rooted cultural bonds and mutual learning spanning half a century. Ruan’s calligraphy, a poetic couplet inspired by Chinese classical traditions, further underscores the themes of connectivity, shared prosperity, and civilisational dialogue.

Post-exhibition, all artworks will be donated to FNU, enriching the university’s cultural tapestry and providing valuable educational resources for students and staff. The event aligns closely with FNU’s commitment to fostering inclusive learning environments that celebrate diversity, intercultural understanding, and global cooperation.

FNU’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nii-K Plange, expressed enthusiasm about the significance of the event, saying, “This exhibition will undoubtedly enrich the teaching and learning environment at FNU by exposing our students and staff to rich cultural expressions and fostering a deeper appreciation for the ties that bind our nations. It exemplifies the university’s dedication to promoting international dialogue and understanding through the arts.”

FNU’s Associate Dean of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) at the College of Humanities, Education and Law (CHEL), Jerry Wong highlighted the educational value of the exhibition.

“Art is a universal language that bridges gaps between civilisations. This event provides a unique opportunity for our students to engage with the cultural narratives and artistic expressions that celebrate friendship, peace, and sustainable development,” he said.

The exhibition underscores critical themes such as Macao culture, maritime heritage, the Belt and Road Initiative, South-South cooperation, and environmental sustainability—values central to both Fiji and China’s shared vision for peaceful and mutually beneficial development.

All students, staff, and the public are invited to view this inspiring collection of artworks, which serve as a testament to the enduring bonds of friendship and the power of art to connect nations.
