The Fiji National University (FNU) is not just a place of learning—it is a place of growth amidst challenges.
These were echoed by FNU Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching, Professor Jimaima Lako at the Orientation for new students at the Naduna campus in Labasa yesterday.
Professor Lako said the university believes in nurturing students’ potential.
“As you begin this journey, I want to emphasise that this is not just a place of learning—it is a place of growth,” said Professor Lako.
“We want to see you grow not only as students but as individuals who can think critically, collaborate effectively, and create positive change in society.”
“I encourage you to take full advantage of the opportunities available to you—be it internships, networking, student clubs, or engaging in research.”
She emphasised to students that the skills they learn at the University will go far beyond the classroom and will be valuable assets in their professional life.
“During your time here, you will encounter various challenges, but you will also experience moments of achievement and success,” she said.
“Embrace the challenges, because they will shape you into leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals who will lead in business, hospitality, and tourism.”
First-year student, Kaushik Kavitesh Kumar who took part in the Orientation said he is eager to start his journey at the University.
The Tuatua lad from Labasa is pursuing a Certificate IV in Automotive Engineering (Light Machinery).
“I am thrilled to be a part of FNU,” said Kumar.
“I am confident that the exceptional learning skills provided here will equip me with the necessary tools to succeed in life.”
“The supportive faculty and student community have already made me feel at ease, and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from the best.”
The orientation recorded more than 350 participants.
