Singh’s Journey through Trade Qualifications to skilled New Zealand Mechanic

Press Release Posted On: May 21, 2024

Abhishek Vishal Singh.

Abhishek Vishal Singh’s story is one of defying limitations and achieving success through hard work and education.

Hailing from a remote farming community in Tavua in Fiji, Singh’s path to becoming a respected automotive mechanic in New Zealand is nothing short of remarkable.

His story is a powerful testament to the value of trade qualifications.

“Trade qualifications can also provide an income equal to or even better than some university degrees. Trade Tests can open doors to great careers, both locally and abroad,” Singh said.

Singh’s pursuit of formalising his qualifications began in 2016 when he joined the Fiji National University’s National Training and Productivity Centre’s National Trade Testing Scheme.

NTPC’s National Trade Testing Scheme offers skills assessment and certification in 29 various trades, and it is highly recognised nationally.

The scheme sets the standards for certification by consulting with employer representatives, trade unions and relevant government bodies, to ensure that the standards set for the scheme are relevant and specific to the needs of the industry.

Singh’s decision to join the scheme stemmed from a desire to validate his existing skills, honed while working in a Ba garage. Despite limitations imposed by his family background and access to formal education, Singh completed his Trade Test levels III, II and I., from 2016 to 2024.

“Education was always important to me, however circumstances made me enter the working field at a young age. These challenges never gave up my thirst to gain a comprehensive understanding of vehicles.”

Earning his Trade Test III qualification in 2016 translated to a full-time mechanic position at Automart PTE Limited in Lautoka.

Following a successful three-year tenure at the company, where he further honed his technical expertise, Singh set his sights on new horizons and landed a mechanic role in New Zealand after completing his Trade Tests II and I at NTPC.
