Newly-enrolled students of the Fiji National University’s (FNU) College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (CAFF) were welcomed at Kononivia Campus this morning through an interactive Orientation session.

FNU Vice-Chancellor Professor Toby Wilkinson applauded the students for commencing their tertiary studies and assured them that the University will do its best to help them acquire all the skills they will need to succeed and prosper in the new world post-COVID.
According to Prof Wilkinson, the past ten months have witnessed ten years’ worth of innovation in the digital sphere as businesses, individuals and universities have been forced to move their activities online and that the e-economy and delivery of e-services have leapt ahead, creating opportunities for young people to shape a new future.
“Last year has been one of the disruptions around the world due to COVID-19. We have seen immense changes in the economy and society. But one thing that has remained constant is the need for sustainable food supply and food security and so by studying at this College you are undoubtedly part of the post-COVID future,” Professor Wilkinson said.
“2021 is a time of great change but it is also a time of great opportunity. It is an exciting time for you to be starting your University careers. The world is at a tipping point and it is your generation who will shape the future for Fiji, for the Pacific and our planet.”
The Vice-Chancellor informed students that university is not just about providing them with the skills for today’s job but it is also about giving the students the skills, curiosity and adaptability to face the future with confidence.
“At FNU, we aim to help you acquire the technical, vocational, academic, transferable and life skills so that what you learn here at FNU, you will carry with you for the rest of your lives.”

Meanwhile, it was a momentous occasion for grandmother Laisani Tawake to attend the orientation session with her granddaughter Adi Milika Kainona – a first-year student in the Bachelor of Science in Animal Science programme.
“I feel proud of my granddaughter’s achievement. It is through her that I have been able to experience an orientation session of a tertiary institute and I wish her well in her studies,” said Tawake.
Originally from Taveuni, the first-year student Kainona mentioned that she was looking forward to her first class and making new friends.
“I have grown up back on the island and I’m still trying to adjust to this new lifestyle but I’m sure I’ll get the hang of things soon with the guidance from my grandmother.”
Enrolment has been extended and interested students can still apply for Semester 1 studies at FNU. No late enrolment fees will be charged. Those who have received their Offer Letter can complete their enrolment process online or visit the nearest FNU campus.
