Fiji National University (FNU) graduate Teresia Finau Bukani believes there should not be any doubt in the minds of students who are unsure if pursuing technical or vocational studies will lead to prosperous career opportunities.

According to Bukani, the demand for graduates with technical skills remains high and with sufficient experience and appropriate qualifications, FNU graduates have the opportunity to secure rewarding careers.

She said those pursuing technical or vocational studies should “follow their dream and aim for the stars”, adding that the skills and experience gained would enable one to succeed in their field of work.

The 22-year-old graduated last year in the Trade Diploma in Civil Engineering course offered at FNU’s College of Engineering, Science and Technology (CEST).

Bukani said she chose the programme as she was interested in the field of engineering despite it being a traditionally male-dominated field.

“The learning experience was great as the teachers motivated us and taught us skills that would be helpful and needed in our field of work,” she said.

“Throughout my studies, the support from my instructors and peers helped in my learning journey and I also used the additional services offered at FNU.”

“When learning new topics, I gained insight because it related to current issues faced and one of this was the structural issues that occurred at a shopping complex here in Suva. So, what we learnt was relevant and up-to-date.”

“As a graduate, the technical and vocational skills I have learnt have motivated me to stand up and work towards targets, even though there may be struggles. If there is a will, there is always a way.”

Bukani is currently employed by Concrete Solutions (Fiji) Ltd as a Quality Assurance Officer.

“My role as QA officer includes checking the quality of work carried out by employees and quality control of manufacturing of concrete products such as precast wall panels, precast stairs, precast double tee, floors, foundation works, other civil work and many more.”

“I plan to gain more experience and in the next four to five years I aim to undertake the Bachelor’s course and relevant Masters programme at FNU.”

“My encouragement to others is to do what you love and adapt when needed whilst studying or working.”

FNU is a dual-sector university that provides vocational education and training and higher education programmes in Fiji and the Pacific region. Enrolment for 2021 is now underway.
