Vika’s Unstoppable Passion

There is no obstacle too great when your heart is set on a dream.

For Kadavu native Vika Saku Nabainivalu, passion and perseverance became the guiding stars on her journey from Labasa to the 2025 Hospitality Art Fair in Nadi.

Vika is the only student enrolled in the Diploma in Restaurant Operations (Level 5) programme at Fiji National University’s (FNU) Naduna Campus. Despite being the sole representative from the North, she proudly competed in the Cocktail Mixing category, a first-time experience that she embraced with courage and determination.

“I found out about the Fair through the FNU Facebook page and immediately knew I had to take part to gain more exposure and experience,” she shared, beaming with pride.

But the path wasn’t easy. After sitting down with her husband, the couple realised they didn’t have the means to finance her trip to Nadi. Though disappointed, Vika held firmly to her dream.

“I had to be strong. I couldn’t let go of this opportunity,” she recalled.

Her perseverance paid off. In a heartwarming display of friendship and support, her close friends came together and helped fund her journey, a gesture she holds close to her heart.

“I will never forget their kindness,” she said, her eyes filling with tears.

Vika left Nabouwalu Jetty at 2am and travelled for hours, determined not to miss her competition. After arriving at Natovi Jetty at 6am, she caught a bus to Lautoka before hiring a taxi to ensure she made it to Namaka Campus on time.

Having worked for over a decade as a bartender at various island resorts, Vika left her job to pursue a formal qualification, a bold step towards her dream of becoming a bar manager.

She expressed deep gratitude to her lecturer, Mr Antonio, who provided encouragement and support throughout her preparation.

“I am especially thankful to him for believing in me and pushing me to try something new,” she said.

“To those in the North who dream of a career in hospitality or want to upskill, I strongly encourage you to join us at Naduna Campus. The quality of education and support we receive is truly exceptional.”

After completing her competition, Vika journeyed straight back to Labasa, describing the experience at the Hospitality Art Fair as enlightening and unforgettable.
