The 21-year-old is now a third-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Oral Health at Fiji National University’s (FNU) College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (CMNHS).

Initially, oral health was not his first choice.

“When I first took the course, I became genuinely interested and decided to continue,” Shawn shared.

His initial plan was to study medicine, but he eventually followed his passion for dentistry.

“My first year was tough. Adapting to a new environment was challenging, and I faced many hurdles,” he admitted.

Yet, as time went on, things improved.

“Gradually, I gained confidence and settled into my studies,” he said.

Originally from Malampa province in Vanuatu, Shawn is currently part of a dental outreach programme in Nakavu village, Namosi. Living in Fiji reminds him of home.

“Village life here is similar to Vanuatu. People live close together and support each other,” he added.

“We share food, speak different languages, but through love and respect, we are one community.”

As the second youngest of four siblings, Shawn’s journey is a testament to resilience and passion.
