FNU Disability Centre: A Beacon of Support for Students

Kavita Singh

In a candid interview at the Fiji National University’s (FNU) Disability Centre, we spoke with Kavita Singh, a dedicated staff member, about the vital services offered to students with disabilities.

The centre, nestled within the bustling Nasinu Campus, is a hub of support, providing resources and accommodations to ensure every student has an equal opportunity to succeed.

“Our primary goal is to create an inclusive environment where students with disabilities feel supported and empowered,” Singh explained.

She highlighted the centre’s comprehensive approach, which includes providing assistive technologies, arranging for exam accommodations, and offering personalised counseling services.

When asked about the challenges, Singh acknowledged the ongoing need for increased awareness and understanding within the wider university community.

“We’re constantly working to break down barriers and dispel misconceptions,” she stated.

“It’s about fostering a culture of acceptance and respect.”

The centre’s impact is undeniable. Students have shared testimonials of increased confidence, improved academic performance, and a stronger sense of belonging. Singh emphasised that the centre’s success lies in its collaborative approach, working closely with students, faculty, and other support services.

“We’re not just providing resources, we’re building a community.”
