Serupi Baba, a dedicated Trade Assistant at Fiji Airports, has expressed his gratitude to the Fiji National University (FNU) and the National Training & Productivity Centre for offering Technical Vocational, Education and Training (TVET) programmes. His achievement — graduating with a Plumber General Class III qualification — marked a significant milestone in his career.
The 38-year-old from Saqani village in Natewa Bay, Savusavu, has been working at Fiji Airports for the past four years. His journey into the trade has been driven by a desire to develop his skills and contribute to his community.
“TVET plays a very important role in our country,” Baba said.
“Unfortunately, we don’t see many young people choosing trade jobs. There are very few plumbers in Fiji, and often people overlook this profession.”
“Many believe that this kind of work doesn’t lead anywhere in life, but that mindset needs to change. Skilled trades are vital for our development, and young people should consider them as a viable career option.”
Baba believes that age should not be a barrier to learning new skills.
“It’s a big accomplishment for me. If I can earn this certificate at my age, then there is no reason why our youth cannot do the same.”
“I am grateful for the guidance and support I received throughout the programme. It has opened new doors for me, and I hope it inspires others to pursue vocational training.”
