Unit Name: Building Construction Technology

Description: This course aims to develop the skills necessary to plan and design a single story community building or a home that fits their current and future needs, assess advantages and disadvantages of contemporary engineering materials available, draw and understand their construction plans and successfully complete construction (models) according their own plans. This course builds on the knowledge and skills gained in WWT552 and WWT652 with emphasis on Technical Drawing, Auto Cadd and woodworking skills that forms the basis of this course. Topics include: planning and design (site and position), size, shape and floor plan, construction materials), detailed plans for construction (foundations, floors, walls, windows and doors, roof) directions for construction - setting out and profiling. It also includes, sanitation (storm water disposal), plumbing, electricity etc. and quantity surveying costing (entrepreneurship components as envisioned by MOE TEST Section. Woodwork, Carpentry and Joinery is a major Industrial Arts subject in majority of the secondary schools in Fiji as this course is pre-dominantly skills based, it is essential that all new Industrial Arts teachers, regardless of actual specialist background, receive appropriate training support, to ensure that they are able to effectively teach building construction technology to secondary school students. Effective teaching of timber related courses in secondary schools requires that teachers not only have a working knowledge of the theoretical concepts related to the subject, but more importantly, can demonstrate the acquisition of necessary practical competency.
