Unit Name: General Veterinary Nursing, Clinical Care and Handling

Description: The ethical aspects, client relations, responsibilities towards the employer, patient (animal) and client. Hospital management : Registration, history recording, observation and recording of disease signs, collection and despatch of clinical samples - Urine, blood, skin scrapping etc. Hospital management: record keeping, maintenance of out patient and inpatient wards, care and management of inpatient animals. Administration and dispensing of drugs and medicines. General precaution and safety aspects during hospitalization, nursing and treatment of patient (animal). Safe storage of medicines and safe medication. Observation of the patient (animal) and reporting to the veterinarian with the use of correct veterinary terminology. Rules pertaining to the transport of animals. Basic bandaging of animals. Hygiene of the hospital, apparatus and patient (animal). Theoretical aspects of intensive care nursing, fluid therapy, blood transfusion. Practical monitoring of patient (animal), general nursing aspects of critical patients. Nursing of patient (animal) with contagious and infectious diseases. Medical nursing of the horse and ruminant.
